Chrissy Lush’s photographs are built around moments of suspended consequence. A gesture, encounter or small disruption appears charged with significance, while the circumstances that might explain it remain outside the frame. Constructed with the specificity of observed experience, the images offer the evidence of an event without resolving what has taken place.
Lush exploits photography’s authority as a record of the real to make fiction psychologically persuasive. Her images invite narrative almost instinctively, then resist it, allowing meaning to accumulate between what the photograph appears to confirm and what the viewer imagines around it.

Chrissy Lush
Biography
Chrissy Lush constructs photographs around gestures and events that feel at once highly specific and resistant to explanation. Beginning with an image rather than a predetermined narrative, Lush develops scenes whose significance remains unresolved. A gesture, encounter, or small disruption suggests an event extending beyond the photograph, while the circumstances that might explain it remain withheld. The images offer enough specificity to invite narrative without fixing their meaning, leaving what has occurred—and what might follow—open to projection.
Lush began working with constructed self-portraiture while completing her MFA at Parsons School of Design. Her early series How Things Are centered on disruptions within domestic space, establishing an interest in the point at which internal experience meets the physical world. In Hold Me Tight (2019–2022), she brought younger and present versions of herself together within the same image, using the doubled figure to examine memory, aging, and the instability of recollection. In more recent work, Lush has expanded this vocabulary beyond the doubled self, constructing photographs in which gesture, objects, and spatial relationships carry the weight of an implied event.
Lush holds an MFA in Photography from Parsons School of Design and a BFA in Photography from SUNY Purchase. Her work has been exhibited at The Photography Show presented by AIPAD at the Park Avenue Armory, New York; Future Fair, New York; and Pietra Fine Art Gallery, Rome. In 2026, three of her photographs were shortlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize and exhibited at York Art Gallery, UK. A solo exhibition of Hold Me Tight will open at the Alexander Brest Gallery at Jacksonville University in November 2026. Her work has been featured in Aesthetica Magazine and Border Crossings, where critic Barry Schwabsky discussed Hold Me Tight in relation to the “factitiousness of recollection.” Her work is held in the Møller Collection, Oslo, and private collections throughout the United States. Lush lives and works in Nashville.
